AP Literature: Unit One: Short Fiction: "The Birds" Assessment

For a final assessment, students will closely read, annotate, and analyze "The Birds" examining the Big Ideas, Enduring Understandings, and Skills from Unit One of the current AP Literature CED.

This assessment is designed for AP Literature classes; however,

since the skills and enduring understandings embedded in these activities are universal and foundational high school English skills, with scaffolding, this unit is appropriate for all grade levels, 9-12, especially honors or advanced level courses. You will just need to access the new AP Literature Course at a Glance to access the skill categories and specific skills.

Students will annotate and complete a close reading of Daphne Du Maurier's "The Birds." Students will specifically be focusing on analyzing the function of the characters, the setting, the structure, the narration, and the figurative language/literary devices (1.A, 2.A, 3.A, 3.B, 4.A, 4.B,)

Using the interpretive strategies they have garnered from their reading of  How to Read Literature Like a Professor, as well as other course work, they will construct a paragraph response(s) in which they identify and analyze the significance of the story (MOWAW)  and what elements helped develop this significance (How?) In essence, they will be drafting a developed and thoroughly textually supported paragraph about their interpretation of the text's meaning. (7.A)

With their literary argumentation paragraphs complete, students will now shift to a creative writing assignment where they will conclude this piece of short fiction according to their literary argument regarding the MOWAW (meaning of the work as a whole).In doing so, students will stay true to the the characters, setting, structure, narration, and imagery and symbols of "The Birds."
