In this document are 30 Spanish AP style 20 second conversation prompts. They are meant to help your students feel comfortable speaking for 20 seconds in a variety of situations to a variety of people (tú, usted, and ustedes contexts). These may be used as daily warm-up activities, entrance activities, or full-class periods. I have used them in all of those ways, but my students have found the following to be the most helpful:
Show the prompt on the screen. Read it together and ask for any comprehension clarifications.
Randomly choose a student (I have each of their names on a slip of paper). That student goes first and responds for 20 seconds.
Continue to choose students randomly for 20 second responses (to the same prompt) until all students have responded.
As students respond, I will jot down any common mistakes they are making and point it out afterwards (i.e. Saying “carácter” instead of “personaje”).
If the prompt lends itself to using a particular grammatical structure that they could work on more, I will point this out also (i.e. Reacciona: “Me gusta que…subjuntivo”) after they have finished. After I point this out, I’ll ask each one of them to give me a sentence using that structure that they could have used in the prompt.
The students have found this method very helpful because:
They get ideas from other students for ways they could possibly respond.
The feedback is immediate – they hear what other students are doing well and what they all need to work on together. They don’t need to wait for me to listen to their recordings and get the rubrics back several days later.
It lowers their affective filters – doing the conversation practices becomes far less stressful as they become more comfortable with these activities.
They are learning strategies for how to handle the real exam.
