PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In this four day lesson, students, working in their groups, will analyze primary sources that discuss the ‘peculiar institution’ of slavery. One of the most infamous times in United States history was the beginning and growth of slavery in our nation. In general, slavery is the United States is well-documented, and is taught in the classroom. With this in mind, students will learn of the institution of slavery from various contemporary accounts in the antebellum period. In this lesson, students will have a greater understanding of the institution of slavery, the cruelties of this ‘peculiar institution’, and what life was like in the South. The new DBQ rubric (2015) is attached at the end of this lesson for grading purposes.
