This is a quick power-point review of the AP World History Comparison Essay that is used during my review period for the AP Exam. The power point includes a review of the rubric items, tips for writing an essay that hits all the rubric points, and a suggested essay structure for students to follow.
After a brief overview of the essay and tips, the remainder of the lesson has students work with the 2007 Comparison Essay prompt related to empire building in the Spanish Empire and the Ottoman or Russian Empires. The lesson will require teachers to access the College Board sample student responses which can be found on the College Board website or by following this link:
The lesson is designed to help students practice identifying whether or not the sample essays earned rubric points and has students give each essay an individual score. Students then partner up and review each essay to give it a score of 1-9 based on the rubric items. Finally, I conclude the lesson by revealing the actual scores of each essay and going through each one to show where students earned the points or what they did not do to earn points.
