In this lesson, students will analyze two major works of two famous emperors. The first one is from The Records of the Grand Historian, which describes the life and accomplishments of Qin emperor, Shi Huang-di, who ruled united China from 221-210 BCE. The second reading is from Augustus himself. Augustus, who ruled the entire Roman empire from 27 BCE to 14 CE, highlights his major accomplishments prior to and during his reign as emperor of the Roman empire in a work entitled, Res Gestae Divi Augusti (The Deeds of the Divine Augustus). From their analysis and by answering the questions, students will be able to discuss the author’s tone within the writings as well as the similarities and differences that are within both works.
