In this lesson, students, working in groups, will examine the life, treatment of and view of slaves in ancient Rome and pre-Civil War America. The documents include excerpts from plays, memoirs, and other primary and scholarly sources that delve into this time period in ancient Rome and pre-Civil War America. Each document has guided-reading questions and a graphic organizer has been attached at the end to aid the students in their analysis. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to compare and contrast slavery in ancient Rome and in pre-Civil War America. They will be able to answer the essential question: “To what extent was the treatment of and view of slaves in ancient Rome similar to and different from slavery in pre-Civil War America?”
