In this lesson, students will be working in groups, analyzing excerpts that delve into the life of Caesar. They will look at the works of Cicero, Suetonius, Dio Cassius, and Caesar himself. All of these men had different views of the Republic, and of Caesar. The students will be the historians and answer this fundamental and crucial question: “Was Caesar a noble Roman who saved the Republic from continuous civil wars or was he a typical tyrant that brought the Republic to its end?” To aid them in their evaluation, a T-Chart has been attached. In these lessons, students will understand and appreciate that history has many viewpoints.
