Product Description
After having difficulty teaching the requirements and rubric for the AP World History Compare and Contrast Essay, I created this two period lesson that teaches students to create thesis statements, direct comparisons, provide evidence, and analyze reasons for similarities and differences by comparing and contrasting apples and bananas. Since using this technique, my students’ understanding of the requirements has increased dramatically!

In this bundle, you will receive:

1. A handout with a blank “Compare and Contrast” planning chart comparing apples and bananas (complete with an "aim" and "do now").
2. A 2 - slide Power Point with custom animation to guide students through the “Compare and Contrast” planning chart.
3. A handout with a step-by-step breakdown of the “Compare and Contrast” rubric.
4. A full sample “fruit essay” incorporating the information from the planning chart.

Lesson Plan:

Day 1 – Provide students will the planning chart and have them complete the “Do Now.” Take the students through the planning chart by using the Power Point provided and have them begin to generate their own direct comparisons. This will most likely take a full 40 minute period.

Day 2 – Provide students with the handout which breaks down the rubric, and go over the rubric requirements will them. Provide students with “fruit” essay” and have them work in groups to score the essay based on the rubric.
