This is a very helpful resource that contains around 30 sentence starters for academic writing and speaking. The resource is based on the acronym PEDIR to divide the prompts into categories such as: questioning; understanding; reflecting; comparing; and synthesizing. All of these categories help scaffold discussions with academic language. An example of a solid discussion activity would be to give the students an article, and have each student in a group focus on one section of the sentence starters, and have each student either write down the different information given from other students. You can also use the sheet for comprehension tests on an article, having a student write one sentence from each group.
The most valuable aspect of this resource is that is gives the students lots of practice with the phrases and concepts that they will use to speak and write academically for the AP test. Highly recommended.
