Guidelines and rubric for a research project inspired by the National Geographic series "Going Deep with David Rees." Students are encouraged to identify a simple scientific question (e.g., "how do you make ice cubes," "why do songs get stuck in your head," "is it healthier to drink regular or diet soda?") and do a deep dive into the research on the topic. Students identify sub-questions related to their main question (for instance, a student researching soda may ask what makes diet soda different, what the health effects of soda are, etc.) and explore the scientific research, ultimately producing a presentation and APA-formatted research paper. This gives high school science students some experience with exploring scientific literature, evaluating sources for reliability, and using APA formatting and citation guidelines, which will serve them well if they go into science, education, or other fields. Was designed for a Chemistry class, but can be used in any science class.
