Math Riddle worksheets are the perfect way to practice new skills. Not only are the riddles clever (and occasionally funny), but they also enable the student to self-assess as they complete the puzzle. If they can’t find their answer on the worksheet or the riddle doesn’t make sense, it’s clear that they made a mistake and need to go back and check their work!

This riddle contains 10 Problems in which the students need to approximate a non-perfect square to the nearest tenth. I prefer to use these worksheets as homework assignments (because they are self-checking), but they can also be used as classwork, partner/group work, or an assessment.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.NS.A.2

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions. For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
