Rationale: Era 8 of the APUSH Key Concepts includes the African American Civil Rights Movement and other movements teachers may be less familiar with. This small project provides students the opportunity to learn about the similar and related struggles of other, frequently overlooked communities and with some element of choice.

This content and accompanying activities should coincide with teacher directed instruction regarding the African-American Civil Rights Movement in class, so that students can compare the movements and make connections. I’ve also showed the film “Selma” in the lead up to this work. A writing workshop mini-lesson focused on improving analysis is included.
