This scoring rubric is based off the College Board's "Rubrics of AP Histories," released in 2017. While most of the language on this rubric is identical to that presented by the College Board, I have added or subtracted some points in order to clarify the point, using student-friendly language. Some points to consider when purchasing this rubric:
- The College Board's rubric calls for the thesis statement to "establish a line of reasoning," while I encourage student to establish a "roadmap" of major arguments.
- I minimized the word "during" under contextualization, as I encourage my students to only include content leading up to and continuing after the time frame in question. I encourage them to use words "during" the time period in question in the actual body paragraphs of the essay.
- I encourage my students to use "specific and relevant historical terminology" in their contextualization.
- I have simplified the second point under Analysis and Reasoning in what I call, "Complexity Point."
- I encourage my students to use a specific format when writing their essays and I include reminders on this rubric. I encourage their contextualization and thesis statement to go in their introduction paragraph, their major arguments to be their body paragraphs, and their "complexity" argument to be their conclusion paragraph.
Next to each category / criteria, I list the percentage that each category is worth so that students can strategize which particular parts of the rubric to prioritize while writing an essay using a time limit.
