This is a great activity that leads student through HIPP and document analysis of The Declaration of Independence. The workshop begins with a teacher-modeled HIPP analysis of the Declaration of Independence. I have found this to be very helpful for students who still struggle with the HIPPing documents. I have included guided notes for this portion of the lesson, but this could be easily eliminated for stronger students. Following the modeling and lecture, students are given the Declaration of Independence in sections and are asked to do three things with each section: (1) summarize it in your own words, (2) connect the section to a particular topic or theme, and (3) create at least one tweet and hashtag for each section.
The handout and PowerPoint are included.
