Two important writing skills - Research & Argument Writing - combined into one unit!

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

This unit is intended to extend for a 3-4 week period.

WEEK 1

Brainstorming Diagram and QR code to a more specific diagram

Lecture and handout on the key parts to an argument writing

List of argumentative topics students will choose from to write their papers

Lesson on creating a descriptive thesis statement & the key components

QR code that takes students to a digital organizer to help build a solid thesis

WEEK 2

Lessons on writing a strong introduction, conclusion and body paragraphs.

Organizers and sample argument topic prompts to allow students to practice drafting paragraphs.

Group activity- to practice developing an argument. Comes with slide images, a short embedded video clip,organizer and exit slip.

WEEK 3

Lesson on researching reliable vs. unreliable sources. Organizer to help students determine if their sources are credible.

QR Code to a research library - digital list of references students can use for their papers that co-align with the list of topics included.

QR Code to a reference/source organizer that will allow students to save paraphrases, direct quotes and/or summaries from the sources they are using. Students will also be able to input the reference information and use it later to construct the works cited page.

WEEK 4

Extension exercises and handouts on formal vs. informal vocabulary in writing

Lecture on formal transitions appropriate for academic writing

*Self-edit checklist, Peer-review checklist & 3 kinds of rubrics.

*Purpose of the digital components was so that students would have their writing already saved digitally making it easier when it comes time for them to type their papers. They can simply go to these digital links and copy and paste their work to their papers.
