Appropriate for K-2 and ELL students.
Teaching your students how to critique an art work is a valuable skill. This packet of 3 different critiques looks at "Starry Night", "Jungle with Setting Sun", and "Children Playing at the Beach." These 3 worksheets cover the beginning basics DBAE approach to art education through Art Criticism. This involves looking at the artwork and writing down everything they see, then finding the art elements: colors and shapes.. (The other art elements and principles can be introduced later. ) This is a very basic intro with check lists and a brief answer.
A final section involves how the student feels about the art, introduces art aesthetics. (Studio Art and Art History are the two components not in this beginning set of lessons.) They can draw, write simple words to express their reaction in this small space. Even a smiley face may be appropriate at this point for "feeling".
When you are done guiding the students through the worksheet, have them turn the paper over and draw their own response to the art work. Allow for any creative response. Their picture is to represent their own creativity, they don't have to draw a train but perhaps how a train makes them feel. Stay open on this page!
This is editable with Paintbrush for MAC and Paint for PCs, if you prefer to use different art work.
