This is a game for the vocab of Así Se Dice Level 3 Chapter 4. It's called Tarjetas Dobles. These are the cards with the Spanish vocab words. The teacher will call out the English and students will race to hold up the word in Spanish that matches what the teacher said in English. The concept is simple but it is definitely my students' favorite game that we play. They make sure we play it each chapter. I have the files available for sale for many different chapters. I also have Bingo Call Cards for sale which work great for randomly picking which word to use.
When a colleague explained this game to me I was really confused and didn’t play it because I didn’t understand it. When I finally tried it, it was a huge hit and I started playing it every chapter! It is a student favorite.
Make 2 copies of this entire document onto two different colors of paper. (In other words, you will have 2 complete sets of these vocab words on 2 different colored sheets of paper.) I use card stock for durability. Cut them up so there is one vocab word per card (basically cut each paper into thirds).
I have these ready to go for each chapter of each level I teach. The students ALWAYS request to play. We have played so many times that it makes a great sub day plan because a student can lead it and it is something I already have prepped and ready to go for each chapter. I also bring out old chapters as review before exams.
How to play:
Evenly divide the class into two teams. One team will receive on color of vocab cards and the other team the other color.
Distribute the cards as evenly as possible among the students on each team. The number of cards students will each have depends on how many students are on that team. If you have 10 players on each team, each student will have more cards than if you have 15 players on each team. Typically, for my classes, each students ends up with around 4 to 6 cards.
Tell the students that they have 2 minutes to memorize the English meanings of the cards they have in front of them. They will not be permitted to bring their vocab sheets back out during the rest of the game.
As you begin playing tell students they must not be touching any of the cards. All cards must be flat on their desk.
The teacher will call out words in English. (I use my Bingo Call Cards that I also have for sale but I used to just use a vocab list and randomly choose words). The students with that word are racing to be the first to hold it up. (There is someone from each team who has the word.) If someone from one of the teams accidently holds up the wrong vocab word, that team cannot win that point even if someone did hold up the right word as well.
The competition gets fierce!
Sometimes there will be ties and neither team receives a point that time. After I call about 20 words, they switch cards with a team mate. They teach their cards to that team mate and are not permitted to get their vocab sheets out! I add all words back in after we switch cards so even words that I’ve already called may be called again.
