This product is a set of printable flashcards that provide the American Sign Language signs for basic needs. The cards can be printed and cut out to be used as a tool in learning signs for survival concepts. For example, the individual child or adult can tell a caregiver if he or she is hot, cold, hungry, or thirsty, etc. This set has been used with children who are non-verbal, whether this is from deafness, cerebral palsy, or autism. In some cases, the signs stimulated an understanding of the concepts themselves and facilitated language understanding. Of course, every child is different and may respond accordingly.
Each sign concept is presented as a pair. One card has the English word written with the sign, while the other one has only the drawing of the sign. This arrangement facilitates learning, as both the teacher and the student can look at the card with the translation but then try to remember the concept when looking at the card that only has the sign drawing.
Written explanations also accompany the set. These are set up in a chart where the concepts are listed alphabetically.
