WHY THIS POEM from Pedro Calderon de la Barca's play La Vida es Sue~no??
I hated my Spanish class in high school. We had to memorize this poem without much of an explanation. I had no idea what it was saying, and I was an A+ Spanish 2 student. By one decision made while registering for my junior year in college, I became a dedicated Spanish-learner and teacher. The man registering students suggested that with just 6 more hours, I could have another subject to teach. My response? “NO WAY! I HATE SPANISH!” Finally he convinced me to at least try it. My teacher—Egydio Romanenghi—changed my life. He made the language REAL to me, made me love Spanish. I went to visit him when I found out that he was terminally ill to thank him for his inspiration.
In his class we read the play LA VIDA ES SUEÑO. Suddenly, when we came to this section of the play, the words sounded familiar. AND they actually made sense. I even understood the message— that we should appreciate what we have. So…I like to get this life-message across to the students. I have even had ex-students contact me to tell me that in bad moments in life, this poem came to mind and helped them through it. I'm 72 years old, and something happened just yesterday that brought up this poem. Helped me again. Go figure...The kit has "hands on" packets which are thoroughly explained, worksheets, test, and listening activities, plus the ppt lesson.
