The fall theme makes these interactive math activities perfect to use during autumn or at back to school time. Count the Room may be used at a math center, during small group time, or as an independent activity. This resource reinforces counting and cardinality skills, including subitizing skills, place value skills, decomposing numbers into tens and ones, and numeral writing. It is differentiated to meet the needs of varying ability levels.

Get your children moving around the room, counting, recording the numbers, and counting on! Count the Room is an interactive math activity in which children move around the room looking for the picture cards and then count the dots or objects in the corresponding ten frames. Students record the numbers on their recording sheet.

Included in this packet:

Count the Room fall / autumn picture cards with ten frames depicting the numbers 11-20.

6 recording sheets: (Differentiated to meet the needs of your learners!)
1. “Count the Room” -- count the number shown in the ten frame
2. “Count the Room and Count On”-- add one more to the number
3. “Count the Room and Subtract One”—one less, or one fewer, than the number.
4. “Count the Room and Add 10”-- add ten more to the number.
5. “Count the Room and Subtract 10”-- ten less, or ten fewer, than the number.
6. "Count the Room and Decompose the Numbers" -- take apart the numbers by naming the tens and ones. [Example: 16 = 10 + 6]

"I Can" student direction posters for each recording sheet.

Answer keys for easy correcting and/or for students to self-check their work.

Acorn number cards 1-20 and the <, >, and = signs. Color copies; blacklines are included as well—simply print onto colored tag board or construction paper to add some color!

There are two picture/ten frame cards on each 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper; when printed, each card will measure 5.25”x 8”.

Simply copy the recording sheet, print the color cards and mount them on construction paper and laminate for durability if desired, and this activity is ready to go!

Additional ideas for using the picture cards include:
★ Matching the ten frame picture cards to the acorn numeral cards.
★ Displaying the cards in the classroom to reinforce students’ number sense/numeracy understanding.
★ Using the ten frames as a teaching tool when teaching about each number.
★ Sequencing activity: students put the ten frame cards in the correct number sequence.
★ Using them as flashcards to practice subitizing skills.
★ Using the included acorn numeral cards for number recognition, counting, comparing, and sequencing. If two sets are printed, they may be used for activities such as memory games, in which children turn over the cards and then try to find the matching pairs.

★This activity addresses the following Kindergarten Common Core State Standards:

Count forward beginning from the given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).

Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.


Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1–20, count out that many objects.


Work with numbers 11–19 to gain foundations for place value: Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings.
