AVID and early learners can feel so tricky. Especially after sitting through a Professional Development where they talk about binders and layering. You’re sitting there thinking, “My students can barely wipe their nose and you want them to do what!?”
Start simple. The simple things you do in Kindergarten will help immensely in subsequent grades!
I created these mini-books as a way to introduce Kindergarteners to the idea of using 2 column notes. Mini books help with organization too (WICOR anyone?). When students have a question refer them to the mini book that can help them.
As with any focused note taking one page can take multiple days. An example of how to extend one page over multiple days would be to draw a picture one day. The next day add a label to the picture. Another day can be handwriting. You can even have your students add more pictures to the page as they discover more words that start with that letter. The idea being to have them interact with their notes as much as possible.
