Celebrate the life and accomplishments of Abraham Lincoln with a more in-depth approach for older students. This read aloud and the contents of this product are best suited to Grades 2-3 or as a mentor text for Grades 3-5. Use your copy of “Abe’s Honest Words” by Doreen Rappaport and our Common Core aligned text-dependent questions to help students learn the CCSS for Informational text 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. Model close reading as you demonstrate returning to the text for the answers. Then have students complete our Close Reading fact sheet as a scaffold for writing an opinion paragraph (CCSS W1) or informational paragraph (CCSS W2). Also included are differentiated vocabulary challenges (CCSS L4) and a discussion scaffold that will help you teach the meaning of the first sentence of the Gettysburg Address, including two math problems (2.NBT.B.5)!
