Activity used in AP Psychology for 5 years and has lead to average scores above 4 each year. Appropriate for non-AP as well.
Students pick a celebrity/fictional personality to case study over a 2 week period. Each student, then, assesses that character as a potential patient in our fictional mental hospital through the following criteria: Use of the DSM IV TR or new DSM V, the 4 criteria for disorder (MUDA acronym), and the Bio. Psycho. Social. model.
They each create a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation to the classroom (psychologists of our hospital) in order to present that potential patient and any recommendations for admitting to the hospital or other recommendations that include: analysis of the origins of his/her symptoms, analysis of potential treatments for any diagnosis, and an overall recommendation of a treatment plan.
After the presentation, a round-table discussion is had among all of the students (psychologists). A diagnosis must be reached and a consensus on a treatment plan whether or not that includes admittance to the hospital. Treatments to be addressed will range from medication to various eclectic therapy approaches.
