Product Description
This PowerPoint presentation focuses on the emergence of the abolitionist movement in the 1830's-1840's. It begins with a brief examination of organized slave rebellions in American history including the Rebellion of 1712, the Stono Rebellion, Prosser's Rebellion, Vesey's Rebellion, and Turner's Rebellion. It then examines the early leaders of the movement including William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Wendell Phillips, and Sojourner Truth. It then explores the arguments made both for and against the institution of slavery in America. It concludes with a brief explanation of the concept of paternalism and how it changed the reality of slave life for some. This presentation is used in an AP United States history class and is based on the latter part of Chapter 16 of The American Pageant, 14th edition.
