The original context this unit was designed for was in an all Aboriginal metro school, with low literacy levels, small class sizes and composite year level classes.
Each lesson is about 50 minute blocks. The lesson plan provided are merely suggestions as to how the lesson was originally taught. The classroom teacher will always know their students best and modify their programming to suit their needs.
This unit of work has been tried and tested on three separate classes ranging from years 3 to 9 with successful results in engaging students in hands on work, reflecting on the past, other cultures and their own work, possibly teaching students a little about their own culture, and reminding students about building respectful relationships with students of varying cultures.
The unit has been mapped to the Australian Curriculum in years 3 to 10 under the subject areas of English, Health and Physical Education, Civics and Citizenship, History, Geography and Visual Arts as of 17/08/15. Not every year level is mapped to every subject, it is just mapped to where it could fit the lesson plans and curriculum. The unit of work may or may not be updated as the curriculum itself is updated. Please confirm by checking the Australian Curriculum website for any updates or changes made since this was published. There is no need to focus on all the mapping connections made to the Australian Curriculum. It is there as a suggestion for what these lessons could be used to cover in what is always a busy year where covering all the curriculum needs of our students can be hard, trying and requiring a little creativity at times.
