As a former Civics and Government teacher, I wanted to find a way to get to know my students and their political knowledge and interests. A few years ago, I created this political style "About Me" Survey to give my students at the beginning of the course. Having this knowlege on hand helped me to address the elephant (or donkey) in the room, political disagreements. By allowing my students to be open and honest with me up front about their feelings about their government, politics, and the country in general, I was able to immediately peak their interest. This resource also helped me to foresee disagreements between students and encourage respectful dialogue among my students. I was able to create flexible groupings based on this information to ensure that my students weren't always working with a partner of the same political ideology. What an amazing way to start of the year- an engaging activity that gives students a voice, AND a helpful tool for you the teacher to better serve the needs of your students!
