Welcome! We all know how students enjoy sharing about themselves. "About Me Graphic Organizer & Writing Project" gives your students an opportunity to do that! It also gives you an opportunity to assess your students' writing skills at the beginning of the year - or at any time. It’s a flexible writing project that can be tailored to the ability levels of students in grades 3-5.
There are two graphic organizers. One is for students who have pets, and one is for students who do not. The topics covered on the graphic organizer are: family, interests, goals, summer, pets, and favorites. There are two sets of student writing pages with the heading displayed for each topic. One set gives each topic a full page. Another set has two headings on each page - giving each topic half a page. An extension page is included for students who want to write more. All student writing pages come in two versions - with a border and without.
During this activity, students receive an instruction page about basic paragraph design. They are instructed to include: 1) an introductory sentence that is indented, 2) interesting details, and 3)a conclusion that refers back to words used in their introduction. Students are also asked to check their work for proper beginning and ending punctuation. There is a place for them to circle 'Yes' or 'No" as to whether they have:1) indented their first sentence, 2) capitalized beginning words of sentences, and 3) used proper ending punctuation. Students are asked to fix any omissions.
I have used this material during the first two weeks of school with my 4th graders for many years. After completion, students enjoy decorating their graphic organizers. These, along with their writing, make a wonderful display for parents to enjoy at “Back-to-School" night. A letter with detailed instructions on how I have used the material is included in the download.
I hope you and your students enjoy this writing project as much as my students and I have!
