This activity is a great way to document a child's developmental progress and self-awareness throughout the school year. The file contains 12 writing prompts for each month of the year and prompts the child to draw a picture of themselves at each month. Example: "This is a picture of me in August!" There is also a place for them to write their name at the bottom of the page each month so name-writing progress is shown month to month. Each page is cutely designed and makes for a unique book at the end showing the child's monthly progress. I included each page in their portfolio and parents loved seeing their child's creativity each month and the progression of their intellect! Although most schools are only in school for 9 months, 12 months are provided and summer months could be sent home with parents.
Each month before the children complete their self-portrait we talked a little bit more about what to include. It was fun to see the kids begin to add hands, feet, details, and accurate portrayals of themselves through the year.
This is a great "first day of school" activity for August and a good kick off to an "All About Me unit" It also helps give the teacher an initial assessment for the developmental stage the child is at.
