Students review President Lincoln's rise, presidency, and death by organizing 22 events on a timeline and answering 4 questions. They classify each item according to a system detailed in the instructions, complete one task for 6 items of their choice and another for 4 other items of their choice. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. This could work for a sub and the answers are provided where appropriate.
Sample timeline items and questions include:
--enlists in Black Hawk War
--signed Emancipation Proclamation
--delivers Gettysburg Address
--delivers Spot Resolution and speaks against Mexican-American War
--What do you consider Lincoln's greatest success and why? Would historians agree with you, why or why not?
--If you could give one piece of advice to Lincoln at any point during his life, what would it be and why? Do you think he would have heeded your advice, why or why not?
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
