Abraham Lincoln had complicated views on racial equality and often had to balance his personal opinions with his publicly-expressed ones. In this historical investigation packet your students will compare Lincoln's statements on “all men are created equal” communicated to different audiences and in different contexts. They will write a hypothesis after each document set and will be able to develop a more complex argument as new evidence emerges.

In the assessment section of this packet your students will write a reflection answering the historical investigation question: “Does Abraham Lincoln believe that "all men are created equal" includes black men?”
