This is a graphing calculator activity designed to help students explore the transformations of the y = |x| graph. Working individually or in groups, students investigate transformations to the parent graph and write descriptions comparing and contrasting them. They begin to see the patterns of the different transformations and develop the rules of how to graph them on their own. The transformations included are horizontal and vertical translations, dilations, and reflections. This activity takes a full 90-minute block to complete.
I used this as an introduction to absolute value functions in Algebra 1 and as a review of the topic in Algebra 2.
