Description
Help students understand absolute value functions conceptually with this engaging discovery lesson! Students explore how changes to the absolute value parent function affect tables, graphs, and equations through a hands-on card sort activity followed by targeted practice.
This resource is perfect for helping students move beyond memorizing rules and instead see how each transformation impacts the graph.
⭐ Teachers love that this activity...
- Encourages conceptual understanding through discovery learning
- Supports multiple representations (equations, tables, graphs, and descriptions)
- Works well for partner or small-group instruction
- Reduces prep time with print-and-go materials
- Reinforces learning with structured follow-up practice
- Includes answer keys for quick checking and grading
What’s Included:
✔ 1 Absolute Value Functions Card Sort
✔ 2 Follow-Up Practice Pages
Card Sort Activity:
Students...
- Complete tables of values from given absolute value equations
- Match equations to their corresponding graphs
- Match equations to written descriptions of transformations
- Analyze how changes in the equation affect the shape, direction, and position of the graph
This activity promotes math discussions, collaboration, and deeper understanding of transformations.
Follow-Up Practice Covers:
- Identifying the vertex, x-intercept(s), and y-intercept
- Graphing absolute value functions
- Writing equations from given absolute value graphs
Additional Details: ✔ Answer keys included
✔ Ideal for Algebra 1 or Algebra 2

Hi Kasey,
So glad you liked this lesson! Thank you so much for this feedback! The blank graph is supposed to be left for #3 for students to draw... but I realized my instructions could have cleared. I've updated the instructions now to hopefully help in the future!
