This 7-page product covers in a fun and humorous way how absolute value functions are transformed from the parent function. I tried to write this lesson from the point of view of a high school student. I must say this isn’t always easy to do. However, my students enjoyed the humor, while having fun trying to figure what words such as sumptuous, erudite, and yawing mean. (Oh, they also learned new math words as well!) Furthermore, throughout the activity, they are given “big time hints” to help them discover properties of transformations pertaining to absolute value functions. I guarantee that the lighthearted nature, the fun notes, and the hints will help students have more fun learning these difficult concepts.
The lesson itself is set up so students can fill out tables and make graphs on the same coordinate plane. This will enable them to discover how various transformations occur. Students will then write verbal descriptions of how the parent function has been changed. To help them have success with these challenging concepts, a "flow chart" will guide them through the process. In short, this exploration will give your students a deeper understanding of the hows and whys of basic transformations. As always, I encourage students to partner up when working on this lesson.
