### Description

UNIT OVERVIEW:

The study of absolute value function transformations (v-shaped graphs) provides a strong foundation for transformations of other function types that will arise later in the course.

Solving absolute value linear equations and inequalities strengthens students’ linear equation solving skills without the need for a linear equation review unit.

Lesson 2: Absolute Value Transformations

Students will:

• analyze the effect of composite function transformations on the graph of the absolute value parent function, f(x)=|x|, including x-axis reflection, y-axis reflection, vertical stretch and compression, horizontal stretch and compression, vertical translation, horizontal translation
• describe transformations from transformed equations and graphs, write transformed equations from graphs and verbal descriptions, and graph transformed functions

Lesson 3: Multiple Representations of Transformed Functions (Absolute Value)

Students will:

• compare transformations of absolute value, linear, and quadratic functions
• represent transformed functions on graphs and tables, write the domain and range, and describe transformations using function notation and verbal descriptions

Lesson 4: Solving Absolute Value Equations

Students will:

• solve absolute value linear equations
• identify extraneous solutions
• |ax+b|=c, |ax+b|=|cx+d|, and |ax+b|=cx+d

Lesson 5: Absolute Value Applications

Students will:

• write and solve absolute value linear equations from word problems
• interpret the meaning of the solutions in terms of the applied context

Lesson 6: Solving Absolute Value Inequalities

Students will:

• Solve absolute value linear inequalities
• Represent solution set on number line
• Interval or inequality notation
• No solution and all real numbers problems included

Lesson 7: Solving by Graphing

Students will:

• Solve absolute value linear inequalities
• Represent solution set on number line
• Interval or inequality notation
• No solution and all real numbers problems included

EACH LESSON CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS:
