• Analytical Notes Instructional Guide with example from the novel
• 4 Sample Passages with graphic organizer
• 1 Student Choice Passage with graphic organizer
• Common Core Support Guide
Here are the skills students employ when using the Analytical Notes Strategy
✔ Determine text meaning and make logical inferences
Based on the central theme statement or main idea, the students generate logical inferences in the why important and as a result columns. These inferences encourage students to determine and evaluate the significance of main ideas and the impact of behaviors and actions on other characters or figures.
✔ Determine central themes and analyze their development
The left column of the analytical notes requires students to generate central themes. The why important and as a result columns analyze the development and impact of these themes.
✔ Citing Specific evidence to support analysis
For certain responses, students need to add specific quotations that support the main idea, why important, or as a result.
✔ Analyze how and why individual events/ideas develop
The why important component of the analytical notes pushes students to explore multiple factors that caused and influences major events.
✔ Assess how point of view shapes the content
As the students create the analytical notes, they are thinking about the character, figure, or author’s point of view. Student understanding of the point of view becomes evident with an in-depth as a result column.
✔ Compare & contrast ideas and behavior
When the central theme or the area of focus zeroes in on the comparison of behaviors and actions, the why important column of the analytical notes assesses the significance of each behavior or action on other characters, figures, or variables.
✔ Analyze events and determine cause/effect relationship
The completion of the why important and as a result columns of the analytical notes show a clear relationship between cause and effect. In fact, students explore the relationship among multiple causes and effects.
