Annotation Organizer: Active Reading Strategy

This annotation organizer supports close and active reading by prompting students to write questions, comments, connections, and predictions while reading. Students ask themselves and respond to multiple levels of questions related to behaviors and actions in the literature.

The Annotation Organizer is a great way to teach annotation skills.

Students employ the following skills:

✔ Students respond to central themes and relate to central ideas.
Questions in the first column are related directly to central idea. These questions help the students to explore the central themes using comfortable language.

✔ Students justify their point of view and explore the relationship between their point of view and the point of view of one or more characters.
In the column labeled comments, students use their own language to discuss their point of view. The writing is personal, but the content directly relates to the question. Students are expected to justify and support initial comments.

✔ Students relate the literary experience to their lives or to other literature.
Through the make a connection column students think about this relationship. The idea of connection-making is that it has a personal, associative nature; the students’ comments in the previous column help to increase the likelihood that a sound connection is made.

✔ Students use the information they have gathered to make a prediction
The process of completing the annotation organizer provides the information necessary for students to make predictions. Students are led to this critical thinking skill through reflection on the information gathered in the first three columns.
