The Character Analysis Organizer supports close and active reading, and encourages the following skills.
Analyze the literature to determine the author’s purpose and character’s motivation.
The symbolism and characterization column encourages students to think about the author’s purpose for portraying a character in a particular way. The connection between the cited text and the student’s thinking about the author’s language provides a strong association in the student’s mind.
Analyze character emotional responses to obstacles in the setting, theme, and plot.
The exploration of conflict establishes the foundation for understanding these obstacles. The symbolism column helps the students to think about character responses in a different perspective.

Based on the cited text, students generate logical interpretations connected to the literary elements, characterization, symbolism, and conflict. The conflict is an inferential statement based upon story events and character interactions. The symbolism is an inferential representation of what take place in the story. The character column contains insights into the individual. These inferences encourage students to determine and evaluate the significance of text and its impact the behaviors and actions of characters.
Draw conclusions and analyze these conclusions.
The statement of conflict is a conclusion based upon evidence provided in the text. The in-depth analysis comes through the completion of the other columns and the addition of relevant quotations from the text.
Compare events, behaviors, and actions.
When the chart is completed for two characters, a clear comparison exists.
