Found poems take existing texts and refashion them, reorder them, and present them as poems. The literary equivalent of a collage, found poetry is often made from existing novel passages, newspaper articles, street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or even other poems.
A good resource to use with Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This is a fun, creative, quick poem exercise that can be used at any point during the novel. I typically do it at the end so students have a lot of background information on all of the passages. I sometimes like to connect it to theme and have students connect their poems around specific themes from the novel.
