This project for high school art students explores the history of abstract expressionism and non-objective, gestural mixed media compositions. Jane Davies is the contemporary exemplar. I include Materials Needed, Resources, Introductory Activities, Student Activity (in handout ready format, which you can edit and adapt to your needs), Closing Activites, Assessment and Resources. I have designed this to encourage students to feel the effects of the essentials of line, rhythm, texture, and movement, which can be a great loosening activity. I have found that after this activity students put more expressive marks into their artwork, no matter what the subject. You can easily adapt Common Core elements to this since students discuss expression of ideas. One of them also incorporates the Golden Ratio of mathematics.
