This superbly designed Abstract Expressionism Powerpoint centers on the art styles known as Abstract Expressionism. The lesson starts with a Do Now for students to begin thinking about what they see, practicing the description portion of art criticism.
Students are introduced to the major characteristics of Abstract Expressionism as well as four major Abstract Expressionist artists, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. Students are able to view and discuss a number of Abstract Expressionist paintings, understanding the styles of each artist and each art style as a whole. At the end of the presentation, there is an informal quiz to check for student understanding. They may answer independently or work as a group. Lastly, students are asked to reflect on their lesson, making a judgment on the style as a whole. More importantly they are asked to back up their opinion with valid reasons.
