The single best thing you can do to support language learners (and by happy accident, all learners!) is get them talking about content! By providing them with the structure for having a good academic conversation, you build their capacity to co-construct knowledge and negotiate meaning.
Use this template to listen to and assess student language.
1.Share your expectations with students: be transparent about your "look fors."
2.Model a good Academic Conversation.
3.With space for up to 30 names, you can place the template on a clipboard and circulate the room, listening to student talk.
4. Use the data you collect to give specific feedback to students about their Academic Talk.
