This is a helpful handout to use while students are editing their drafts, and I use it to get them to replace poor and over-used diction.
I will ask them to alter 3-5 sentences, then raise their hand for me to check their revisions. I will float around the room helping them, or have them line up at the podium. I have found that if you say "go review" or "go study" or "go edit" that does not suffice. I must give them a more concrete goal, so sometimes I will do this and make them line up to get checked off (and I will stamp or initial the draft) after they hit the goal we set.
Make the goal attainable in the time frame, and have frequent discussions with them about their writing, and they will undoubtedly improve. Good luck, and happy teaching!
