Educators understand why vocabulary instruction has such a profound effect on student comprehension of academic content. We understand that a person’s knowledge of any topic can be grounded in their experiences and terms they know related to the topic.
People who know a great deal about carpentry understand terms such as, blind mortice, mortice, dovetailed, tenon, bull nose, dressed countersink, cross grain, end grain. Likewise, students who understand the content in their state standards regarding Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure and Integrating Knowledge have an understanding of terms such as, determine, explain, justify, correlate and distinguish.
The more students understand these terms, the easier it is for them to understand information they may read or hear about the topic. On the other hand, without a basic knowledge of these terms, students will have difficulty understanding information they read or hear.
We built various resources to align to the work of Dr. Robert Marzano and his six steps to vocabulary instruction. It involves the following steps:
1. Provide a description, explanation, or example of the new term.
2. Ask students to restate the description, explanation, or example in their own words.
3. Ask students to construct a picture, pictograph, or symbolic representation of the term.
4. Engage students periodically in activities that help them add to their knowledge of the terms in their vocabulary notebooks.
5. Periodically ask students to discuss the terms with one another.
6. Involve students periodically in games that enable them to play with terms.
We incorporated a Teacher’s Guide, use it along with the resources to explore high-leverage (multi-use) ELA action words. The vocabulary words we included are verbs aligned to both the Common Core Standards and numerous State testing programs.
The resources can be utilized grades 2-8 depending on your students.
