Your students will internalize these domain-specific language arts terms by making them their own! Completing an entry includes rewriting the word with correct spelling, writing a definition in the student's own words, using it in a personally meaningful sentence, drawing a picture or symbol, adding extra information like synonyms or examples, and evaluating his or her level of confidence using the word.
A helpful chart for the teacher shows alignment of vocabulary words with the ELA standards, including words that are used in the Common Core standards and words that can support instruction in each of the strands: Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language.
These Academic Vocabulary graphic organizers do not have the definitions provided. A major part of the learning experience for students is coming up with their own definitions, pictorial representations, and examples for the words.
