This PPT includes two vocabulary mini-lessons (12 total available), incuding a graphic organizer and active participation, with the purpose of bolstering students' familiarity with academic vocabulary: the most common words to appear in textbooks and on standardized tests.
While many of these words seem rudimentary, we often take for granted that our students know and can use these words, especially words with multiple meanings across content areas. Even good readers are not necessarily using these words in their own writing, so exposure puts them in the spotlight. I suggest creating a word wall to accompany the lessons, as I have had great success in pointing out each time a student uses a word. They rise to the challenge!
