Teaching Accents using ABC Cards
Why do I need to teach children accents through ABC cards?
As children begin to learn or acquire knowledge of letter names and shapes, this is a strong predictor of their success in learning to read. (National Reading Panel & T.E.A.) Once the children know the letter names (through ABC song, rhymes, block activities), these 4 accented decks of card activity will reinforce the name of the letters and help them with the ability to remember the sequence of letters by name and identify tone through the use of the red accent symbol. For example, in both the upper and lowercase deck, the child can read the card and vocalize an emphasis on the red accent symbol. In turn, the accents will help the child with fluency, rate, and prosody.
