The Stono Rebellion of 1739, which took place in the British colony of South Carolina, was led by enslaved Africans who were captured in the Kongo region of West Africa and forcibly transported to the Western Hemisphere.  This excerpt was taken from a recording made in 1937 as the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Writers’ Project. The speaker is George Cato, great-great-grandson of the Stono Rebellion leader, Cato.
