Looking for a way to engage students in Math Talks? The Accountable Math Talk Cards are a great way to encourage students to use mathematical language to foster deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. These cards encourage student-to-student conversation with guidance from the teacher. The cards are divided into the following sections:
1. Getting Started (8 cards)
2. Working on the Problem (12 cards)
3. Retelling / Reflecting (8 cards)
4. Whole-Class Discussion (8 cards)
5. Accountable Talk (12 cards)
Altogether there are 48 cards in this packet. These cards can be used as individual, partner or group questions. On the back of the getting started, working on the problem, retelling / reflecting and whole-class discussion are sentence starters that student can use to formulate their responses.
There is also a poster included that states rules for math talks, although you might want to co-create this with students - it can be used as a guideline. These cards are presented in both color and in black and white.
Please take a look at the preview to see what these cards look like. If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them!
