Often times we notice that our kids are struggling to discuss academics with one another whether it be reading, characters in a book, mathematical concepts, or events in history. Just like we use sentence starters for writing, conversation starters can be a great way to kick-start conversation and keep it going for a long time.
These conversation prompts are differentiated and can be used for students at different levels. The lowest level of conversationalists can gain guided help in simply starting a conversation with a peer. On-level conversationalists can practice not only starting a conversation but questioning about a topic to learn even more. The highest level conversationalists can learn to respond to one another and build on the ideas of others through agreements or disagreements.
We found that these guided conversation prompts worked best on a ring and were brought to all class and partner discussions.
