This can be used as a poster or handed out individually to the students when engaging in an oral discussion with a focus on using "Accountable Talk". We found it helpful to give our students a copy of the sentence starters that was all on one sheet, so that they could easily engage in a discussion with their peers no matter where they are placed in the classroom.
Oral discussion is a prerequisite skill for reading and writing. It is important that you are able to engage in a conversation/discussion and express yourself prior to being expected to write a formal response whether it be a short response or a multi-paragraph essay. "Accountable Talk" focuses the students attention on how to listen to their peers and add to the discussion while maintaining the topic.
We also have posters for the individual categories; "Confirm", "Agree", "Disagree", "Clarify", "Confusion", "Connect", "Inquire", "Extension", and "Summarize" that we hang in our room with some of the sentence starters. Please see the link below to order the "Accountable Talk" posters.
